Ocean Passage - Azores - Plymouth

£1,375.00

1200 miles of roughy toughy ocean sailing as we sail across the Atlantic from Ponta Delgada in the Azores to Plymouth, UK.  This is the toughest trip of our itinerary for the year and can be quite rough and windy.  Please make sure you have read our notes on ocean passages before booking.

You will gain miles for your log book and experience taking part in a watch system.  You will find out about on board maintenenace schedules, long distance catering, weather forecasting etc. We are happy to teach the wonders of navigating by the stars, use of a sextant and  how the GPS works!.
If you are planning on becoming an Ocean Yachtmaster in the future this trip also provides  the ideal opportunity to learn the practicalities without the responsibility.  Lin is both an instructor and examiner for this qualification and happy to share with you her knowledge gained through years of experience.

If you wish to use this trip as a qualifier for RYA Yachtmaster Ocean  you must confirm that with us in writing (e mail) before hand. Only 2 of the spaces are available for this. One of these places is already taken

Join us in Ponta Delgada on the island of San Miguel.  To get here it is easiest to fly from UK to Lisbon and then there are many daily flights from Lisbon to Ponta Delgada.

The weather on ocean passages is unpredictable and to allow for this and for your safety we allow plenty of time for this trip.  With fair winds and flat seas we can have a fast passage back to UK, in which case we will use the 'spare time' to visit ports on the south coast of England.  In 2012 the weather forecast was bad, and so we used our spare days waiting out the weather in the Azores, last year we were becalmed and had to burn a lot of diesel to make it on time.  Either can happen, it is all part of the experience.

Preparation is the key - and we do not head straight out into the ocean.  Our first day is a familiarisation day.  Full safety briefing in the morning followed by a day sail in the bay off Ponta Delgada in the afternoon.  Next day, weather permitting, we set off on our ocean passage and start the watch system straight away.

Plenty to look out for as we go, other shipping, yachting and sea life.

Well thats 4 trips and very nearly 5000 miles now on Velvet Lady, looking forward to the next 5000!

My dream of a long Atlantic passaage fulfilled - many many unforgettable expereinces: A gale as usual, sunrises and sunsets, nights skies seen from a new angle. Learnt a lot about weather and passage planning - Thanks Lin and Richard and Velvet Lady - as a skipper of my own boat it has been a master class in Ocean Sailing

This is a sample itinerary only –on ocean passages the weather dictates the programme.  You can read about previous ocean passages from the Azores to UK in my blog

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800.  Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast follwed by safety briefing. Learn about the boat and where things are kept.  Afternoon sail doing drills and skills in the bay - a great time to learn about sailing the boat, we have to establish that everyone is up to speed before we set off on our ocean passage

Day 3 – We may need a second day of drills and skills, if not we will depart San Miguel and sail hard on the wind northwards

Days 4 to 15 -  Participate in the watchkeeping routine whilst we are at sea.  Once we are across the Azores high pressure area we hope to pick up a strong westerly air flow  and maybe visit a few other ports before Plymouth

Day 16– Make landfall at the Lizard lighthouse, arrive Plymouth, sample the nightlife ashore

Day 17 – Breakfast, depart

This is an example itinerary of what we did last year on an ocean passage aboard Velvet Lady. Most years this trip takes 14 days.  Should we complete the ocean passage faster we will use the extra time to cruise along the beautiful cornish and devon coastline. Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht and all our passages are great for milebuilding and hands on sailing no matter what your experience.  All our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. On all our trips it is possible to book an individual berth and become part of a group. To see our other opportunities for ocean passages and milebuilding  please see our schedule
