Our Popular Lofoten Islands 10 night Sailing Holiday

Last year we sailed 220 miles, visited 10 picturesque harbours and anchorages, spent a couple of hours drifting with killer whales, watched majestic sea eagles soaring in the sky, anchored in tiny coves next to white sandy beaches, motored between towering cliffs down the majestic Trollfjord, caught plenty of cod and had a BBQ at our favourite anchorage.

We will spend the days sailing amongst the spectacular scenery and the evenings on board or exploring ashore.  Relax and let us look afular

The Lofoten Islands have long been considered the most scenic holiday destination in Norway, especially by the locals. Steep mountains are lined by golden sandy beaches and emerald green seas, with small fishing villages nestling in between. There are many wild and beautiful anchorages and pretty harbours for us to explore. It is a mere 50 miles from Bodo on the mainland shore to these beautiful islands.

It is easy to get to Bodo by air.  Fly from many UK airports to Oslo and then get a connecting internal flight.  If you wish to extend your holiday you could also consider coming by train or the Hurtigruten coastal steamer.

Where you go on your trip will be totally dependent on the weather.  Last year every trip was different.  We visited a total of 29 places over 5 trips, 10 of which were new to us and many from previous years did not fit in with the weather.  We know the area really well, and whatever the weather we guarantee that we will chose the best places to go to make your sailing holiday unique, memorable and enjoyable.

Comments from last year

Thank you so much for a magical 12 days on board.  We have had a wonderful time in beautiful scenery. Your hospitality has been unfailingly warm and always calm - full of great sailing stories from your travels that made us feel we were almost sailors ourselves.

There are literarily hundreds of places to visit in this cruising area. The actual itinerary will be decided each week, to make the best use of the weather and to visit and explore as many places as possible. We will mix anchoring in wild scenic fjords with mooring in tiny fishing villages. To give you some idea of what we may achieve here is an example itinerary from a previous year.   You can read all about last years trip in the blog

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800. Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast followed by safety briefing. Sail 25 miles north to the fabulous anchorage at Vettoya.  Swim from the golden sandy beach or admire sea eagles from the boat. (25nm)

Day 3 - Set off on the first long sail of the trip across the Vestfjord to Reine.  Expect this to take 6 - 8 hours. Reine is found in all the tourist books as one of the top 10 places to visit.  (45 nm)

Day 4Head north towards Ballstad, a fantastic small boat harbour.  Last year on the way we encountered 5 killer whales and spent 2 hours drifting with them - what a fabulous sight.  There was still time to anchor for a swim in Kvalvika before tying up in the small boat harbour (25nm)

Day 5A lovely day sail to Henningsvaer - arriving in time for a walk and a visit to the climbing club. (22nm)

Day 6 – A short sail to Skrova in time for lunch.  Spend the afternoon walking up the hill and then on to the beach for an afternoon swim. (10nm)

Day 7 – From Skrova we sailed up to the fantastic isolated anchorage of Ulvagen.  Great place for swimming and even better for catching cod. (12nm)

Day 8 – A busy day - motor north through narrow channels to the spectacular Trollfjord.  Here the birds are nesting on the cliffs.  Picnic lunch.  Mid afternoon sail south and through the narrow gap between the islands of Store and Lille Molle.  Arrive in Haversand - we consider this our favourite place in Lofoten, walk ashore on the causeway and then return to the boat for a BBQ. (30 nm)

Day 9 – Another long sail back across the Vestfjord to Landegode and an anchorage on the north coast of this beautiful island (45nm)

Day 10 – Swim and explore ashore before sailing south to Bodo, arriving early evening (16nm)

Day 11 - Breakfast, depart

This is an example itinerary of what we did last year on an adventure sailing holiday aboard Velvet Lady in the Lofoten Islands. Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht. All our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. Beginners are welcome on these trips and on all our trips it is possible to book a slot and become part of a group. To see other itineraries for skippered charters in the Lofoten Islands please see our schedule.
