Atlantic Islands Passage-Lanzarote to Madeira and more

8 nights to explore the Atlantic Islands of Lanzarote,  Porto Santo and Madeira.

This 8 night trip includes a 3 day passage from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands to the beautiful  island of Madeira and is a great introduction to offshore sailing and watchkeeping, gaining plenty of miles for your log book.

If you have never been at sea for longer than day sailing - don't worry, this is one of the best ways to find out if longer passages are for you in the future.

This trip is not all about passage making.  We manage to combine the 3 day passage with some coastal cruising at either end. After an introductory sail we head off across the Atlantic towards Madeira.  As an added bonus if the weather is good we also have the opportunity to visit the tiny island of Porto Santo on the way .

We only take 4 people on our long trips giving us lots of room on board so you may book whether you are male or female and there is no problem with cabins

Join us in Marina Rubicon on the south coast of Lanzarote and we will spend our first day sailing along the east coast to Puerto Calero. Last year as we approached Puerto Calero we were surrounded by whales and could see whale spouts in the distance.  The locals told us they were 'Tropical Whales'

We then set off on a 2 to 3 day passage to sail 270nm across the Atlantic to the Madeira Archipelago. In previous years we have spotted quite a bit of wildlife.  Dolphins leaping at us through the waves and not one or two but three whale sightings.  The most dramatic being as we approached the coast of Madeira and were in sight of the Desertas Islands in the calm before the storm.  We saw a huge blow in the water ahead that turned into ‘smoke’ and it was obviously coming nearer – enough for us to get sight of 4 blows, and then a fin on the back before the tail.  Wow what a sight to signal the end of the passage.

We allow time in our itinerary in case of bad weather - if we have good weather and time in hand we often stop in either the tiny island of Porto Santo, or Funchal the capital of Madeira.  After spending the night there we continue sailing to our destination Quinto da Lorde marina  situated close to the airport at the eastern end of the island, our port of disembarkation

We started in sunshine and ended in sunshine - making Madeira on one tack.  What a super boat and Lin and Richard were wonderful hosts - wonderful food and expert sailors.  THANKS A BUNCH

I didn't really know what to expect but Lin and Richard soon settled us in, instilling complete trust in theire abilities and experience.  Velvet Lady is a great boat - our bash to Maderia was a great find and true ocean experience.

This is a sample itinerary only –on ocean passages the weather dictates the programme.  You can read about last years trip in my blog

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800.  Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 20.00

Day 2 – Breakfast followed by full safety briefing.  Learn about the boat and where things are kept – short day sail to Puerto Calero

Day 3 – Depart Puerto Calero and head north  for Madeira, 270nm away

Days 4,5,6 -  Participate in the watchkeeping routine whilst we are at sea

Day 7  – Arrive in Porto Santo, a tiny island 35nm NE of Madeira, spend the day exploring ashore.  Here it is traditional to paint your ships name on the wall before departure.

Day 8 – Depart Porto Santo for our last sail across to Madeira.  We end the trip in Quinto do Lorde marina at the very eastern tip of the island.

Day 9 – Breakfast, depart

This is an example itinerary of what we did last year on an ocean passage aboard Velvet Lady.  In previous years we have stopped in Funchal instead of Porto Santo.  Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht and all our passages are great for milebuilding and hands on sailing no matter what your experience.  All our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. On all our trips it is possible to book an individual berth and become part of a group. To see our other opportunities for ocean passages and milebuilding  please see our schedule
