Sail in the Norwegian Fjords between Bergen and Floro

Half way between Bergen and Floro, right in the middle of our proposed cruising area is the largest fjord in Norway – The Sognefjord.  With its spectacular national parks, mountain ranges, glaciers, waterfalls and numerous hiking trails  there is plenty to see here both afloat and ashore.

Mention sailing in Norway and you immediately see a picture in your mind of long spectacular fjords. The coastline that stretches between Bergen and Floro is referred to as Fjordland and has fascinating landscape that changes around every turn.

Fjords with narrow arms and steep rock walls are  protected by tiny offshore islands with white sandy beaches.  Quaint fishing villages await nestled at the bottom of the snow covered mountains.

The cruising ground is extesive - see interactive maps here

This one way trip from Bergen to Floro gives us the chance to explore amongst offshore islands as well as into this fabulous long fjord.    We will spend the days sailing amongst the spectacular scenery and the evenings on board or exploring ashore. All the fun of sailing with none of the responsibility.  Relax and let us look after you

Explore Sogneford - Norways Largest Fjord - The Highlights

  •  Spend 8 days sailing between spectacular islands and have 1 day dedicated to exploring ashore in one of the inner branches of Sognefjord.
  •  Sail approx 25 miles per day amongst stunning scenery, with 24 hour daylight we have plenty of time to make harbour and allow plenty of time to explore ashore
  •  Relax in the late evenings either with a drink on board or in a local bar ashore.
  • Stroll along spectacular white sandy beaches, or climb steep hills for superb views.
  •  Try your hand at fishing.
  •  Anchor in secluded bays.
  • Add extra days to your holiday at the beginning or end to see more of this fabulous country.

Direct flights are available from UK to Bergen - or fly via Oslo and add a night in Oslo to your trip.  Fly home from Floro via either Bergen or Oslo, or add to your experience by travelling on the Hurtigruten coastal ferry or even the train.

So, where will we go.  Within this  sailing area there will be plenty of choice.  Our final decisions will be based on the weather forecasts and we like to remain flexible during the trip. As the crow flies It is 40 miles from Bergen to the mouth of Sognefjord and 40 miles from Sognefjord to Floro. In reality all of the routes are weaving amongst islands with opportunities to sail inshore or offshore.  This gives us great flexibility for short sailing days and lots of shore exploration or longer sailing days with detours to offlying islands.  We will work a great itinerary to suit the weather

The plan will be to cruise amongst islands for 3 nights south of Sogefjord before entering.  Spend 3 nights inside Sognefjord with one day designated as a shore day and then spend the last 3 nights coast hopping up to Floro. We have been coming to Norway for 10 years now and have a real feel for what our guests have really liked. We guarantee that each week, we will look closely at the weather, and then we will be able to chose the best places to go to make your sailing holiday unique, memorable and enjoyable.

Hard to believe this trip you made so magical is over.  You two are a terrific team with your combination of expertise and relaxed but attentive demeanour.  Learning about sailing the boat with your calm directions was such fun.  I loved the combination of secluded anchorages and harbours.  Your trip was the best way to experience the norwegian coast

What a wonderful 11 days of sailing in a magical part of the world.  Lin and Richard were the perfect hosts.  Wonderful food and excellent seamanship lessons.  We enjoyed the leisurely starts to the day, nice sailing and plenty of time to explore the islands.

There are literarily hundreds of places to visit in this cruising area. The actual itinerary will be decided each week, to make the best use of the weather and to visit and explore as many places as possible. We will mix anchoring in wild scenic fjords with mooring in tiny fishing villages. To give you some idea of what we may achieve here is a sample itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800. Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast followed by safety briefing. Sail north from Bergen amongst the islands to Herdlefjorden and anchor just off the small town of Herdla.  Take the dinghy ashore here to explore on this small island which is also a bird sanctuary.

Day 3 – After breakfast set off to weave our way amongst the islands and arrive at the pretty harbour of Eivendivic.  There should be space for us on one of their modern long pontoons.

Day 4 – We make our approach to Sognefjorden, and stop for the night at Leirvik on the north side of the entrance to Sognefjord

Day 5 – Winds in fjords can be fickle so prepare to sail or motor east into the fjord, through spectacular scenery and anchor in the secluded sidearm of Fjaerlandsfjord.

Day 6 – A shore day.  Take a 2 hour hike in a beautiful valley up to Boyabreen Glacier, hire a bike or a kayak and go exploring – or relax on board Velvet Lady and enjoy the ambience of nature.

Day 7 – Ready to go sailing again head west to the mouth of the Fjord and the anchorage at Rutlandet, this time on the south side of the fjord.

Day 8  - Open water sailing today as we leave the protection of the Sognefjord and head to the tiny island of Askvoll and the harbour Askvika.

Day 9 – Detour offshore to the island of Froya and the picturesque fishing village of Kalvag.  The largest and best preserved fishing village in western Norway.

Day 10 – Walk to a glorious sandy beach for a morning swim last short sail to Floro.  Arrive early afternoon for a chance to explore ashore.

Day 11 - Breakfast, depart 1000

This is an example itinerary for an adventure sailing holiday aboard Velvet Lady in Norway. Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht. All our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. Beginners are welcome on these trips and on all our trips it is possible to book a slot and become part of a group. To see other itineraries for skippered charters  please see our schedule.
