Andalucia and the Algarve - Gibraltar to Vilamoura

We're in Gibraltar Bay and heading west to the Algarve.  Spend a few days sailing in the Gibralatar Strait, Spend a day in Morocco and then head off overnight to Faro. This is a great introduction to night sailing for beginners, and good practice early in the season for budding yachtmasters,

We will be moored in the Spanish town of La Linea, right next to Gibraltar airport and we will finish in Vilamoura - 20 mins from Faro airport.

The easiest way to get to Gibraltar is to fly direct from UK, but to increase the number of flights you could also fly to Malaga and take a bus.

Join on board between 12 noon and 1800.  If you are early go off and find your own lunch, mid afternoon we will have tea and biscuits and at 1800 it is time to meet your fellow crew mates and discuss the trip.  Please do not be later than 1800.

We do not run courses but this trip is ideal to get hands on sailing and practice all the theory you may have learnt in a classroom over the winter!

We will finish the trip in Vilamoura marina - 20 mins in a taxi from Faro airport.

If the weather was perfect, this is what we would be able to do!  We will adapt the itinerary to suit what is possible with the weather that we get at the time.

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800.  Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast, safety briefing. Learn about the boat and where things are kept – short day sail down the coast to Tarifa and anchor with time to explore this old Spanish town.

Day 3 – Sail further along the coast to Barbate

Day 4 – Time for a quick dash across to Morocco and a visit to Tangier

Day 5– Spend the day wondering the souks of Tangiers or visiting the ancient fortress

Day 6 - Set off from Tangier to sail 140 miles to the Algarve, we should arrive mid afternoon tomorrow.

Day 7 – Make landfall and anchor in the lee of Culatra island just off Faro and Olhao

Day 8 – Take the dinghy ashore in the morning and sail back to Vilamoura in the afternoon.

Day 9 – Breakfast, Depart 1000

This is an example itinerary for a sailing holiday aboard Velvet Lady.  Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht and all our trips are great for hands on sailing no matter what your experience.  We have to be practical so all our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. On all our trips it is possible to book an individual berth and become part of a group. To see our other opportunities please see our schedule

AAA  Primarily day sailing, but one day of the trip will include being at sea for up to 36 hours.
There will be a mix of short and long days – upwind and downwind sailing.  Although mainly coastal there will be some offshore sailing.  We will stop most evenings although sometimes we will eat dinner on our knee in the cockpit underway.  If the weather is bad we can change the itinerary and stay in port.
