Easter Sailing along the Andalucian coast, Rota to Gibraltar

Its Easter - time to dust off your sailing kit and join us in the Spanish sunshine.

We would love to bring Velvet Lady all the way up the river to Seville, but instead we will be based on the coast in the Old town of Rota. The best airport is Seville which still gives you a great opportunity to visit this delightful Spanish town on the way to the coast.

Its Easter and flight costs are going up.  As of 19 February the cheapest flights are with Easyjet from Bristol to Seville and then back from Malaga to Bristol.  Bus links from Seville to Rota and Gibraltar to Malaga are easy and the round trip will cost approx £220

For a similar cost you can fly from Edinburgh or Stansted.

On 9th April there are direct buses from Seville bus station to Rota at 10.45, 1300 and 16.45 .  You will have to take the airport bus which runs every 15 minutes into town first,  This takes about 30 mins.

For a bit more money you can also fly with Easyjet from London Gatwick to Jerez airport which is nearer and then on by bus to Rota.  If you need help with buses/trains etc, please do not hesitate to ask us.

Join on board between 12 noon and 1800.  If you are early go off and find your own lunch, mid afternoon we will have tea and biscuits and at 1800 it is time to meet your fellow crew mates and discuss the trip.  Please try not to be later than 1900

We do not run courses but this trip is ideal to get hands on sailing and practice all the theory you may have learnt in a classroom over the winter!

We will sail south from Rota, across Cadiz bay and visit many other old Spanish towns on the way to Gibraltar.  There is also the opportunity to hop across to Morocco.

We will finish in the Spanish town of La Linea - right next to Gibraltar airport.  Fly home from Gibraltar or take the bus to Malaga for a better selection of flights,

Our Sailing Holiday highlights include

  • Opportunity to explore Seville before arriving at the boat
  • A day ashore in Gibraltar
  • Sailing in Atlantic Waters
  • Visit many old historic Spanish Ports
  • Hop across to Morocco and spend a day in Tangier
  • Spend peaceful nights at anchor enjoying the stars
  • Just relax on board and enjoy the sailing wherever we go
There are direct flights to Seville from many UK airports.
Other options are fly to Malaga and take a bus or fly to Gibraltar and take a bus.

If the weather was perfect, this is what we would be able to do!  We will adapt the itinerary to suit what is possible with the weather that we get at the time.

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800.  Welcome reception, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast, safety briefing. Learn about the boat and where things are kept – short day sail across the bay to Cadiz with time to explore this old Spanish town.

Day 3 – Lets spread our wings a bit further today and sail 30 miles to the small marina at Barbate

Days 4– From Barbate it is a 25 mile dash across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco and the old town of Tangier with a big modern marina just on the outskirts of town.

Days 5 - Spend the day wondering the souks of Tangiers or visiting the ancient fortress

Day 6 – Cross the Gibraltar strait again - this time to anchor in the shelter of the island of Tarifa and take the dinghy ashore to visit this old fishing port

Day 7 – Its 20 miles from here to Gibraltar, but the straits often funnel the wind, so it could take a while!.  Arrive in Gibraltar bay late afternoon and moor in the new marina at La Linea - a short walk from Gibraltar (If there is room we will moor in Gibraltar itself but..)

Day 8 – Spend the day exploring ashore in Gibraltar

Day 9 – Breakfast, Depart 1000

This is an example itinerary for a sailing holiday aboard Velvet Lady.  Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht and all our trips are great for hands on sailing no matter what your experience.  We have to be practical so all our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. On all our trips it is possible to book an individual berth and become part of a group. To see our other opportunities please see our schedule

AA Day sailing holidays during daylight hours in more testing weather conditions
This trip is great for all experience levels including those new to sailing, but if you are expecting flat water like the Solent the sea might come as a bit of a surprise!  The swell of the Atlantic can reach as much as 3/4 metres and thus present more of a challenge.
