Explore the north coast of Spain - La Coruna to Gijon

£925.00

The Spanish Rias stretch east from Coruna, along the north coast ending at Ribadeo. We will continue a little further along the Biscay coast into Asturias and end our trip in Gijon. This will be new to us, but there is nothing like the buzz of visiting somewhere for the first time.  Expect the unexpected.

This trip gives us the opportunity to mix short days of relaxed sailing in the shelter of the rias  with a longer passage along the Biscay coast to Gijon.

Our Voyage highlights include

  • Sailing aboard a powerful and comfortable Oyster 55
  • Opportunity to practice your navigation skills
  • Pull the ropes and take the helm as we enjoy sailing in the sunshine along a beautiful coastline
  • Practice your Spanish in the bars ashore
  • Experience the tranquillity of sailing beneath a starry sky
  • Take the dinghy ashore and swim off a sandy beach

We start this trip in the north, and base ourselves at the pretty marina Sada on the outskirts of A Coruna. We finish in the old town of Gijon.

Part of Galicias charm is how unspoilt it is - it is not known as a British tourist area so don't expect direct flights. There are many options of getting to the boat with airports in La Coruna, Gijon (named Asturias/ Oviedo) and Santiago.  You could also fly to Bilbao or fly/take the ferry to Santander.  All airports have really good bus links.

If the weather was perfect, this is what we would be able to do!  We will adapt the itinerary to suit what is possible with the weather that we get at the time.

Day 1 – Arrive on board 1800.  Join us in Marina Sada – a short distance away from La Coruna. Welcome, introductions and itinerary discussion. Dinner served on board at 2000.

Day 2 – Breakfast followed by safety briefing.  Lunch. Sailing drills in the Ria de Betanxos then on to La Coruna in the neighbouring Ria.  Spend the evening ashore exploring this bustling city.  Take a stroll to the Torre de Hercules.

Day 3 – More skills and drills as we sail from La Coruna to the Ria de Ares 15 nm away.  Here there is a tiny new marina that might have space, otherwise we anchor off the golden beach and try a swim.

Day 4 – Sail north from Ria de Ares to the beautiful Ria de Cedeira (30nm) – A great opportunity to take the dinghy ashore to this picturesque little town and sample the local vino!

Day 5 –  From Ria de Cedeira head north east around Cabo Ortegal on on towards Ria deViviero.

Day 6 – From Ria de Viviero head further east to the last of the Spanish Rias, Ria de Ribadeo and anchor in the bay.

Day 7 – There is a good choice of anchorages along this stretch of coast, but we will probably anchor halfway between Ribadeo and Gijon  in Cudillero.

Day 8 – After a great sail from Cudillero we will end our trip by arriving in Gijon.  Well known for its maritime heritage and old fishermans quarter, we need to be there in time to go out and explore.

Day 9 –  Breakfast, depart 1000

This is an example itinerary of an adventure sailing holiday aboard Velvet Lady in the Spanish Rias.  Velvet Lady is an Oyster 55 skippered yacht.  All our sailing holidays are weather dependent and the exact itinerary will be decided by the skipper to suit the weather conditions. For other trips and sample itineraries please see our schedule.

AA Primarily day sailing, but watch out for the weather.  There may be bigger swell than you are used to.
Expect a mix of short and long days – upwind and downwind sailing.  If the weather is bad we can change the itinerary and stay in port.
