Lofoten Islands and Norway Travel Information

Travelling to Norway and the Lofoten Islands

Our base for most of our trips in northern Norway is Bodo.  As with all our destinations, this area of Norway still remains unspoilt and off the beaten tourist track.  Getting there is easy if not direct – fly from UK to Oslo on a variety of carriers, and then take an internal flight from Oslo to Bodo  The airport in Bodo is a mere 20 mins walk from the marina, or 5 mins in a taxi.  For our one way trips that start or finish in Stokmarknes there is an airport nearby with 5 flights a day to Bodo with the local airline Wideroe.

Flights to Oslo International (OSL) are available from many UK airports.

London Heathrow – daily www.ba.com

London Heathrow, Manchester - daily flights with connection to Bodo at Fly SAS

Regional Airports and budget airlines - Try these search engines Flightmapping,  Essential Travel ,Skyskanner ,Just the Flight

Flights from Oslo International (OSL) to Bodo (BOO) are available from Fly SAS

Budget internal flights are also offered by Norwegian Air Shuttle.  There is a possibility that Norwegian Air Shuttle may offer direct flights from Edinburgh to Bodo in the future.

The cost of a return flight is approximately £250

Travelling to or from Kristiansund(KSU) in Norway

Fly from your local UK airport to Oslo and then take one of the many daily flights from Oslo to Kristiansund with either SAS or Wideroe airlines.

Please ensure you book flights to Kristiansund(KSU) and not Kristiansand which is in southern Norway.

Velvet Lady will be a 15 minute taxi ride from the airport

For more information on how to get to Kristiansund you may find this Visit Kristiansund link helpful

What to Bring

Bodo and the Lofoten Islands are situated at 67 degrees north, well inside of the arctic circle.  However the weather here is milder than you may think as it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. The temperature in the summer can range from as low as 10 degrees to as high as 22 degrees but is very unpredictable and can change daily. Even on the warm sunny days, the wind chill makes it cooler whilst we are underway and so it is important to have enough clothes to wrap up warm. When packing please remember to use a soft bag – there is no room for hard suitcases on board. Please also note that whilst we have more stowage space than a smaller yacht, space is still limited We provide you with:
Use of breathable foul weather gear
Use of lifejacket and safety harness
Duvet, pillow, linen and one large towel
When packing for a sailing trip please remember that lots of thin layers are better than one thick one. It is easier to cool down than to warm up, so we recommend that you start with a lot of layers, and if they are too much you can always take one off.

Bearing this in mind we advise you to bring

Thermal underwear
T Shirts/Polo shirts
Polo necked jumpers
Thermal Mid layer trousers and top
or
Fleece Jumpers – please do not bring woolen jumpers as they are difficult to dry
Fleece Trousers or tracksuit bottoms
Sailing/Walking trousers – please do not bring jeans as they do not dry
Fibrepile Jacket or other similar warm jacket
Socks – 4 - 6 pairs of thermal socks and 4 – 6 pairs of thin inner socks
Fleece Hat
Fleece neck warmer
Gloves
Sailing boots with non marking soles, or clean gardening wellies will do. Keeping your feet dry is important
Deck shoes with a non marking non slip tread (fine treads are more effective than deep treads)

Much of this clothing is available from specialised sailing shops, but can be expensive. Any outdoor clothing for walking, skiing, hiking etc will work just as well.

Casual clothes to wear ashore
Hiking boots or good strong shoes/trainers for walking ashore

Don’t forget for those warmer days
Swim suit
Shorts
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Wash Kit
Personal medication - please bring sufficient for the trip plus extra and anything you might need in an emergency
